The road test allows the driver to demonstrate an understanding of safe driving by adhering to the rules of the road. The road test may be taken once the knowledge and vision tests are successfully completed at a driver testing center, and you have practiced supervised driving.
Testing in Other Languages
Foreign Languages
DPS can only offer the driver license knowledge test in English or Spanish. You must be able to understand road signs written in English to pass the test(s).
Due to a limited number of license and permit specialists who are bilingual, DPS cannot guarantee driving tests will be available in Spanish at every driver license office. If a Spanish-speaking specialist is available, then the driving test may be given in Spanish.
You may bring someone to translate, but the translator may only help the applicant communicate with the specialist before and after the knowledge or driving test is given. Translators are not allowed to help you during the tests. The specialist will use hand signals and other non-verbal cues during the driving test if you do not speak English. These non-verbal cues can be explained to you with the help of the translator before the test.
Commercial Driver License (CDL)/Foreign Languages
DPS can only offer the commercial driver license (CDL) knowledge test in English or Spanish.
Driver License Test Appointment
Interpreters are prohibited during the administration of the CDL skills test. Applicants must be able to understand and respond to verbal commands and instructions in English by a skills test examiner. Neither the applicant nor the examiner may communicate in a language other than English during the skills test.

If you are hearing impaired you may bring someone with you to translate or you may request DPS to provide a certified ASL interpreter. To request an ASL interpreter, please:

- Contact your local driver license office at least four business days before your visit.
